There are some deception tactics you can do, if you're quick enough, to delay a police response. Depending on your skill sets and equipment, it's possible to completely finish a mission without raising a single alarm, though you'll be working pretty hard to do so. However, even those situations have some leeway: if a civilian barely saw you, even with the mask on, he may not realize what's going on (he might think it was a figment of his imagination). If civilians spot you with your mask on, they'll call the cops ditto if they hear a strange noise, such as your drill. Alternatively, if you shoot out the window with an unsilenced weapon, civilians may call the cops simply because they heard the gunshots regardless of whether they saw you. However, a patrolling guard may find the broken window, and once he does, he'll trigger the alarm. Taking the previous example in the Jewelry Store heist, if you can break glass without being heard (such as using a silenced weapon), no one will panic because they simply won't know you're there. Civilians won't know what to look for and will generally ignore you, but the guards and cameras will be watching.Īny suspicious activity will cause alerts, but you'll have some leeway. The more you're carrying and the bigger it is, the easier you are to be spotted. Everyone will don their masks automatically if cops are called or alarms are sounding.īeing the expert thief you are, you'll be carrying a bunch of equipment with you as you enter an area. Once the mask is put on, it cannot be removed, and you'll be committed to the heist. Note that each player can individually put on their mask, or not. When you're ready to start the heist, press and hold the G key, which will put on your mask. However, you can make your plan in relative peace as long as you keep moving try to communicate with your teammates as well, in case you spot something unusual or unexpected. You're not allowed to jump, plant any explosive or other device, or use weapons. Unfortunately, you can't do any significant action while casing an area. Remember that if you can beat a mission quickly, you can move on to the next one that much faster. It may not completely avoid a fight, but it can delay the initial response time of the cops, which can mean the difference between getting out clean or having to slaughter several dozen cops and taking an unnecessary risk. Even better, civilians and guards can't hear glass being broken (though they will hear the gunshots if you shoot out the window with an unsilenced weapon). You can see an early example of that in the Jewelry Store heist, since you can quickly access the back rooms if you break a window and jump through. Also, remember that just because a camera can see you, it doesn't mean the police will be instantly alerted someone has to actually press an alarm or call the cops, and if you can deal with witnesses quickly and quietly enough, you might delay a police response. See if there are any alternate entrances, or if you can see a high value target immediately. Try to take a wide path around them, but definitely look around unless your uniform and equipment are registering as “high visibility,” you'll have some time to get a feel for the place. (Some heists, such as Fatal Frame, will skip Casing Mode.) If you stray too near to cops or cameras, you'll arouse suspicion. You'll start most heists in “Casing Mode,” where you're just walking around as a normal civilian. Either way, your overall goal is to get what you can and bail as quickly as possible.

You can usually hang around a mission after the required loot is stolen to try to take more, but then it becomes risk/reward. To maximize your profits, you'll want to get in, get your loot, and get out as quickly as possible. That means for the sake of efficiency, you should avoid fights if you can help it.

They slow you down and don't help your financial reward either, so there is no point in hanging back and trying to wage a war. Cops therefore are enemies to be avoided, not engaged if at all possible. Although statistics are gathered for your attacks, your headshots, and your body count, they do not reward you under any circumstances. However, note that XP is not gained for kills. XP tends to scale with the mission difficulty, while cash scales with the difficulty and that particular heist's payout. You'll get both upon completing any given heist. Cash is used to purchase new unlocked items (weapons, masks, armor, etc.). Experience points are used only to level up, with each new level granting one skill point. This is no longer the case in the sequel, and both are recorded separately. In the original PayDay: The Heist, cash from your heist was directly your experience points.
